The latest Federation of Small Businesses' (FSB) Small Business Index shows a growing skills shortage in the workplace. Now identified as a significant barrier to growth for small firms, almost one third (29.9%) of those surveyed report skills shortages as hampering growth, with construction and computer services particularly hard hit.

Increased prioritisation of primary and secondary education and literacy by governments, especially in emerging regions, is translating into a boom in uptake of tertiary education in many markets: the number of higher education students globally rose from 163 million in 2008 to 199 million in 2013, with more female than male students.  In the long term, this is good news for consumer goods companies and retailers. The trend is increasing the skills of the world’s population, reducing skills shortages, increasing productivity and also raising incomes and living standards.

Research Reveals Multi-Billion Dollar Promise of Untapped Supply Chain Finance

Businesses are missing out on billions of dollars (US) by failing to tap into one of the least used methods of alternative finance, says new research published by global accountancy body ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and Aite Group. The research, launched at ACCA’s 2nd Alternative Finance Conference in London this week, shows that suppliers of all sizes across the world could be missing out on between $60bn and $120bn by failing to exploit the potential of reverse factoring, through which businesses can finance themselves against the credit ratings of their major customers and achieve prompt payment in exchange for a discount.
