In July 2005 BMRB Social Research launches a new government survey called `Taking Part`, which will measure participation in sport and culture activities throughout England. The Department for Culture, Media & Support (DCMS) and its partners have commissioned this continuous national survey, comprising 27,000 in home interviews with adults, plus a 1,500 boost among black and minority ethnic groups.

The survey will help DCMS to assess progress towards its overall aim of improving quality of life through cultural and sporting activities. Previously assessment was limited by the fact that participation was measured separately for different activities, revealing little about participation across different activities. The new survey will provide a comprehensive national picture, enabling policy makers to understand exactly who is taking part, and where development initiatives and marketing activities should be targeted. The first results are due to be published at the end of 2005.

The key partners in commissioning the survey with DCMS are Sport England, Arts Council of England, Museums, Libraries & Archives Council and English Heritage.
