BMRB is carrying out the 2005 Childcare and Early Years’ Providers survey on behalf of DfES. This survey has been carried out in previous years (most recently in 2002), and looks at the types of people who work in childcare, and their qualifications and training. This year, there is also a section on the costs incurred by childcare and early years’ providers and their income. The survey covers a range of providers, including full day nurseries; playgroups and pre-schools that provide sessional care; out of school provision for school age children and registered childminders. Fieldwork is currently underway, and the aim is to achieve around 4,500 telephone interviews in total.

Childcare is an important policy area, and there are plans to recruit and train a substantial number of new childcare workers over the next few years. To support this, and improve quality, there is to be a radical reform of the workforce, including improved qualifications for early years and childcare workers (increasing the status of these workers, and ensuring that full day care settings are professionally led). Amongst other things, this survey will help to assess how levels of training and qualifications have changed over time, and how aware are childcare providers of the planned workforce reforms.
