Volume growth was slightly stronger than value growth in 2012 due to a large number of retailers continuing to sell colour cosmetics on price promotions. Retailers such as Boots and Superdrug offered “3 for the price of 2” promotions on their colour cosmetics almost all year round in order to encourage consumers to make more impulse purchases .
The economic downturn has affected consumer expenditure and a large number of female consumers do not see colour cosmetics as essential items. For this reason, retailers are being forced to offer price promotions in order to increase both value and volume sales.
Boots UK Ltd remained the leading player in colour cosmetics in 2012 with a value share of 14% and sales of £219 million. The company has two successful brands in the UK, Boots No 7 and Boots 17. Both brands saw an increase in sales in 2012 while Boots No 7 also saw its value share rise by around half a percentage point. The company’s brands benefit from the retailer’s widespread coverage across the UK, as well as strong in-store promotion of its own brands.
Over the forecast period sales of colour cosmetics is expected to record and average value sales growth of 1%. The main reason for this will be the impact of the economic downturn on consumer expenditure on colour cosmetics. Retailers will continue to heavily discount colour cosmetic products throughout the forecast period in order to encourage consumers to make increased purchases.
