40 million people expect to be financially active

The Spring Bulletin found 82.5% of the adult population, an estimated 40 million people, expect to save, invest, borrow or repay debt in the next six months.

We define the ‘financially active’ as people intending to undertake two or more activities from a list of eighteen. These have increased from an estimated 29 million (61% of the population) in March 2005 to some 32 million (67%) in March 2006 with the most financially active (around a third of adults - 16 million) expecting to undertake four or more activities.

A feature of the past year has been an increase in older and less well-off people in financial services activity. Not all people act  for themselves. Since last September we have asked about expected contribution to a Child Trust Fund and found between 500-900,000 people in each survey intend to contribute to a Child Trust Fund only.
