THE CHRISTMAS GROCERY RESULTS

EDWARD GARNER, DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH, TNS WORLDPANEL, comments:

“The latest TNS Worldpanel grocery market share figures published today for the 12 weeks ending 31st December 2006, covering the Christmas shopping period, show that fears of a poor Christmas were unfounded as far as Grocery retailers were concerned as turnover increased by 5% over the equivalent period a year ago.

Tesco shows the biggest gain in absolute terms with a one point share increase to 31.4% although the share is now on a plateau having held above 31% for the last 9 data releases.  This is a reflection of the intensity of the competition from the other retailers.

Sainsbury traditionally trades strongly at Christmas and 2006 was no exception as it narrowed the gap with Asda to 0.2%.  Nevertheless Asda saw a healthy sales increase of 5%, in line with the market.

Whilst the Morrisons growth was a little lower at 4% it is the eighth successive period of positive growth for the Yorkshire retailer which is now firmly on the national stage.

As predicted last period, the 11% year-on-year increase for Waitrose gave the retailer a record Christmas share of 3.9% which is consistent with the strong trading reported by the John Lewis department stores.

As store acquisitions drop out of the annual comparisons, Somerfield has seen a slight share drop from 4.1 to 3.9%. “
