MORRISONS STRONG AHEAD OF REVAMP EDWARD GARNER, DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH, TNS WORLDPANEL, comments: “The latest TNS Worldpanel grocery market share figures, published today for the 12 weeks ending 20th May 2007, carry heartening news for Morrisons as its growth rate continues at the record level of 5% - the highest since the Safeway takeover. This is ahead of any of the new advertising or store revamps coming into action, as recently announced by the retailer. Alongside Tuesday’s news that Kwik Save will close a third of its stores in a battle to secure its future, the share loss continues with the retailer now representing just 0.2% of the grocery market. The share loss at Kwik Save, however, is larger than the share gains displayed by the discounters (Aldi, Lidl, Netto) which implies that we are unlikely to emulate Germany with a wholesale move to discount shopping. Asda and Sainsbury continue to provide some healthy competition for Tesco as they both record strong growth of 8% year-on-year. This has resulted in them both adding 0.3 share points compared with a year ago. The Tesco growth rate is marginally lower at 7% but it is still ahead of the market average, lifting the share to 31.3% compared with 31.1% a year ago. Somerfield suffers another turnover drop of 4% compared with last year although the share has held steady during 2007. Both the Co-op and Independents are largely matching the market growth rate, which remains at 6% year on year, and are therefore holding share.” About TNS: TNS is a global market insight and information group.
