Recent figures out today from the British Crime Survey suggest violent crime is down 11%.
BMRB Social Research has been conducting the British Crime Survey for the Home Office since 2001. This survey now involves interviews with 49,000 respondents per year selected at random from the Postal Address File (PAF). In addition to a main sample of 46,000 respondents, the survey also includes a boost sample of 3,000 non-white respondents identified using a method called focused enumeration.
Home Secretary Charles Clarke said he was `extremely encouraged` by the `very positive` figures in the British Crime Survey - which the Home Office regards as more accurate.
