Web-marketing is an ever expanding method of advertising a company’s products or services via the internet. The internet has benefited marketing hugely due to the low cost of placing an advert and the potentially global customer base that may see the advert or visit the company website. Furthermore, the internet is unique in that it can communicate with the user in a interactive way whilst at the same time being able to elicit responses directly. But it is not simply creating a website for your company, nor is it placing a banner ad on the website of another. Effective webvertising (as it is often called) requires that the creative and technical sides of the internet - design, development, sales, advertising - be brought together to form a synchronised and complete strategy involving direct targeting of the target market through the correct content, ad’s and designs. Internet or Web marketing also refers to the SEO (search engine optimisation), e-mail advertising and the specific placement of banner ads and skyscrapers etc that is often undertaken by businesses, both large and small. Furthermore, there are many companies that offer SEO as their product - this perhaps shows the level to which web marketing is considered important in the business world. One draw back of web marketing however is that the consumer cannot touch, see or smell the product they are buying and there are certain fears over the security of internet shopping. Furthermore, it requires the user to have a certain standard of technology (i.e. a computer) within easy reach and for them to be proficient on it – but in the age of online consumerism and “silver surfers”, it looks like Web marketing is here to stay.
