SAINSBURY AND MORRISONS PUT THEIR PROBLEMS BEHIND THEM AS A BUOYANT GROCERY MARKET SEES GREATER COMPETITION

EDWARD GARNER, DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH, TNS WORLDPANEL, comments:

“The latest TNS Worldpanel Grocery market share figures have just been published for the 12 weeks ending 29 January 2006 and overall trading remains strong – year-on-year growth stands at 4.4% which is the highest since September 2004 – there is little sign of any post-Christmas blues for the grocery retailers.

Sainsbury holds on to its current strong share (the highest since February 2004) with year-on-year growth of 6% for the twelve weeks to 29 January 2006.

By contrast Asda continues to see its growth held back to 2% in common with most of the last year this is below the overall market growth and thus the share has slipped from 17.0% a year ago to 16.6% in the latest period.

Morrisons continues to hold steady – the latest share of 11.1% has remained largely unchanged for the last seven periods.  This means that the decline shown in the 2006 v. 2005 figures will subside as store disposals drop out of the year-on-year comparisons.

Whilst Tesco remains dominant there are signs that it is experiencing increased competition – it is still growing but the year-on-year share increase of 1.6 percentage points is below the average of over 2 points we were seeing last year.”

These findings are based on TNS Worldpanel data for the 12 weeks to 29 January 2006. TNS Worldpanel monitors the household grocery purchasing habits of 20,000 demographically representative households in Great Britain. All data discussed in the above announcement is based on the value of items being bought by these consumers, TNS will only support data that is published in the context we have presented it and our own interpretation of these findings.
