We do research a lot of different ways. Sometimes we order reports from service providers like Gartner. Other times, we survey market funnel companies like Kansas City payroll solutions to see if we can see any trending in market sector pay scales. Traditional sources like the WSJ and NYT are good too.

its very important to really quantify your needs for information and see how the internet can serve you. Otherwise there is really no other method but to go traditional.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?

Hi my name is Sandra,

I am very interested in knowing how marketers search for data. I am doing a research and it would be really useful if you could answer these couple of questions. What tools do you use to find statistics and percentages on specific industries? I imagine that the internet is a great tool, but how do you use it (internet) to help you find information?

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question
Cheers,
Sandra

You are absolutely correct. Internet is a great tool for marketing research. Market researcher can easily find information from search engines like Google. You can get wealth of information from Google search. Also you can use Google local listing and local search to search for specific geographical area.
Also you can use online communities, web sites and wiki sites to gather information for your research.

I think the best advice I have on your query would be to learn more about data mining. You are actually asking the base nature of what a market researcher does (search data). A lot of avenues are definitely available, offline and online. It is a matter of execution related to objectives.
