Simmons Offers First Glimpse into Gay and Lesbian Consumer Study: Technology and Internet
Highlights Include Attitudes Toward High-Tech and Online Behavior
NEW YORK - July 5, 2005 - Simmons, an Experian company and the most respected authority on the behavior of the American consumer, today announced some of the technology and Internet results of its Gay and Lesbian Consumer Study, the most comprehensive study available of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) population in the United States.
"The results of this landmark Simmons study show that the GLBT community likes to stay ahead of the game when it comes to technology and the Internet," said Bill Engel, co-CEO of Simmons Market Research. "The GLBT community has a strong appreciation for emerging technologies, they seek out the latest consumer electronic trends, and are heavy users of the Internet."
According to the results of the study, GLBT adults are more likely than the total population to:
*?????? Enjoy buying new gadgets and appliances *?????? Be the first among their friends to have the latest electronic equipment *?????? Get the electronic products they want regardless of cost *?????? Say that their friends ask their advice when buying electronic equipment
When it comes to online activities, adults in the gay and lesbian population are more likely than the total population to:
*?????? Search for airline/car/hotel information or reservations online *?????? Conduct banking online *?????? Get news and weather online *?????? Participate in online chat forums
In addition, within the gay and lesbian population, gay males are much more likely than their non-gay counterparts to be frequent online users and stay online longer. Lesbian females are much more likely than their non-lesbian counterparts to access the Internet using cable or DSL.
It is estimated that the buying power of the GLBT community is over 600 billion dollars a year. As a result, this population is drawing increased attention from advertisers and marketers. The Simmons Gay & Lesbian Consumer study contains over 40,000 variables offering unique insights into the consumer attitudes and behaviors of the GLBT population segment relative to the general market.
Unlike other consumer studies that use opt-in samples or other nonprojectable samples, Simmons uses a national probability sample survey that provides reliable information about the size, characteristics, and behaviors of the GLBT population. Full results of the first Simmons Gay and Lesbian Consumer Study will be released on September 30th, 2005.???
